Chihuly Persian Chandelier

Artist Unknown
Chinese, Eastern Han Dynasty, 25–220 AD
Model of a Watch Tower
ceramic, n.d.
51 x 22 x 18 inches
Gift of Gerald Shepps in memory of Roslyn and Benjamin Shepps, 2008.359

Beginning in 1994, Ben Shepps gave the Flint Institute of Arts more than 60 works of Chinese ceramic art. Sadly, Mr. Shepps passed away in 2004. However, the Shepps family continues to generously donate important Chinese ceramics to the FIA’s permanent collection, the most recent being a large scale model of a watch tower.

This impressive work was created during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD). The tower is comprised of several different elements, including a courtyard with a gate, and several tiered stories embellished with detailed brackets and other architectural elements carved into the clay. The large scale and high quality of this work indicate that it was likely created for the tomb of an important family. Models like this one were often created and placed in the tombs of the deceased. The Chinese believed in an afterlife and would place many different models of things from everyday life in their tombs that would be useful including animals, buildings, food and furniture.
