The Flint Institute of Arts' educational programming is designed to provide quality art education experiences for school and adult groups, families, and individuals of all ages. From introductory activities to challenging art experiences, the FIA is dedicted to engaging and educating the community about the
visual arts.

K-12 Programs

As a leading art museum in Michigan, the Flint Institute of Arts offers exciting opportunities for educational enrichment to students, teachers, school administrators, and home school groups. Student visits may be scheduled for exhibitions, studio lessons, or programs combining a gallery visit and a studio activity. ArtEXPRESS and ArtREACH, multi-part learning experiences that takes place in your classroom as well as in the FIA galleries and studios, are also available. PDF Click here for more information.

For Teachers

The FIA offers workshops for educators throughout the school year and during the summer. These programs are designed for pre-and in-service teachers, homeschool parents, and volunteers. State Board-Continuing Education credit is now available through the University of Michigan-Flint.

BIG Culture Lesson

During the 2004-2005 school year, the FIA piloted the b.a.s.i.c. program (Bringing Art to Students, Instructors, and Curricula) through a BIG Culture Lesson grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. Click here for more information.

Bishop Gallery

The Bishop Gallery, located in the FIA Art School, is the perfect place for student and faculty exhibitions. In addition, special exhibitions designed to complement Art School and education programs are offered from time to time. PDF Click here for more information.

Docent Program

Volunteer docents provide tours of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions for adult and school groups. Full training is provided. If you like the idea of learning to look at art, enjoy thinking about what you see in new ways, and wish to stimulate other people's interest in the visual arts, then the Docent Program is for you.
