FLINT INSTITUTE OF ARTS TO OPEN “SOMETHING
TO LOOK FORWARD TO” EXHIBITION ON JANUARY 19, 2008
(Flint, MI) The Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) announces the exhibition
Something To Look Forward To, featuring abstract art by 22 distinguished
Americans of African decent to open Saturday, January 19, along
with a diversity/outreach initiative focusing on Black History Month.
The initiative includes special museum hours on Martin Luther King,
Jr. Day with free admission courtesy of Target, and a Gala designed
to expand FIA membership to the African American community. FIA
film and video programming continues in January and February and
includes 5 FIA Theater films highlighting themes related to Black
History Month.
The exhibition "Something To Look Forward To" pays homage
to the exceptional talent, unique vision, and courageous persistence
of particular mature artists who have created dynamic abstract images
and objects during extended and successful careers including Yvonne
Pickering Carter, Sam Gilliam, Lawrence Compton Kolawole and Alvin
Loving.

* Martin Luther King Day Family FIA Art School Activity: Community Quilt
& Identity Stamp Project. Express your identity when you learn to make
a family identity stamp. Inspired by the African American quilting tradition
and the Gee's Bend quilters, participants will make two paper quilt squares
embellished with family identity stamps and more! The maker will keep one
quilt square; the other will be added to the FIA community quilt. This colorful
quilt will be displayed in the FIA Art School for viewing. All ages are
welcome; registration is not required.
