September 10
Auguste Renoir: Dance at the Moulin de la Galette
60 min.

This painting was once described as the most beautiful of all the artworks of the 19th century. Certainly it seems the happiest. But beneath Renoir’s joyful portrayal of working class Parisians at leisure is another, darker story.

September 17
Vincent Van Gogh: The Sunflowers
60 min.

This program reveals how Van Gogh started to paint sunflowers soon after he moved from Holland to Paris and how they became the emblem of his embrace of Southern France, warmth and the sun.

September 24
Georges Seurat: A Sunday on La Grande Jatte

60 min.

A Sunday on La Grande Jatte is a popular masterpiece and yet an enduring enigma. It seems to show a quiet scene in a Paris park but there are hints at the demi-monde, if you know where to look. The most remarkable aspect of this vast canvas however remains Seurat’s technique—his revolutionary pointillism.

Expert commentary and analyses are provided by leading authorities, art historians, and scholars.

October 8
Paolo Uccello: The Battle of San Romano
60 min.
Among the greatest of all depictions of battle, The Battle of San Romano contains breakthroughs in painting technique that must have awed contemporaries. The painting was also the victim of an audacious art crime. Discover the full and fascinating story behind this painting, how it came to be created, and how it influenced other artists.

October 15
Leonardo da Vinci: The Last Supper
60 min.
One of the most renowned paintings in the world, The Last Supper revolutionized Western art. Just how Leonardo da Vinci broke with tradition in creating his supremely dynamic masterpiece is recounted, together with the tale of his disastrous attempt to use a new technique in wall-painting.

October 22
Piero della Francesca: The Resurrection
60 min.
By common consent, The Resurrection is one of the great religious pictures. There is also amazing evidence that the presence of this painting saved the town of Sansapulcro from Allied shells during World War II. Discover the full and fascinating story behind this painting, how it came to be created, and how it influenced other artists.

October 29
El Favor de los Santos: The Sacred Iconography of Retablos and Exvotos
57 min.
With the introduction of Christianity to the Aztec peoples, a new kind of religious iconography arose: retablos and exvotos. Traditionally painted on tin, retablos tell of the lives of the saints while exvotos give thanks for miracles granted. This program brings together art historians, preservationists, and religious practitioners to look at the stories embedded in these paintings and their significance for those who pray to them.
